Fire at Redbridge Towers

Following the fire at Redbridge Towers this evening, Southampton Independents Councillor Andrew Pope, ward Councillor for Redbridge, has issued the following statement:

"I have personally thanked the Police and the Hampshire Fire and Rescue Service for their excellent response in ensuring that no serious injuries were sustained.

However, I was concerned that tenants of Southampton City Council and local residents were not being kept informed by Council officers.

No facilities were made available, despite requests by residents, on what was a cold night. Some residents and children were clearly traumatised and understandably so.

I understand that the Police and Fire Service are already investigating the cause.

I have already begun investigating what the Council did and did not do prior to this unfortunate incident, and have asked for an urgent update."

  1. Yes I couldn't agree more with your thoughts. Having also been at the scene after worrying about many of my friends who live in this block im absolutely disgusted with the lack of communication, support or help with the residents who had been evacuated. I cannot express how the emergency services dealt with this very horrific fire when only a cpl of day's prior to this was the anniversary of the two fireman who lost they're lives at Shirley Tower's. They were absolutely amazing and because of the excellent way of dealing with putting the fire out before there were any fatalities, all credit to the firemen especially! There was no council members who were there to assist with the residents and I am shocked to see the police and firemen not only having the fire to deal with but the constant questions from residents and they're worried family and friends! Cllr Whitbread I did see talking to an officer but he certainly didn't speak with anyone else! An officer told me that they were trying to get Redbridge Schl open to enable the residents somewhere they could go as many were without suitable clothing as the firemen were unable to give estimate the time allow return to flats. This was about 7.30pm
